The 8th Workshop on Corporate Impunity and Human Rights has been taking place since August 12th, in the city of Maputo, organized by Justiça Ambiental. This event brings together civil society organizations, representatives of communities affected by natural resource exploration projects, and academics from several countries such as Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Algeria, Kenya, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia, Japan, USA, Portugal, United Kingdom and Mozambique.
The main objective of the workshop is to encourage discussions that lead to joint solutions to address human rights violations suffered by communities affected by natural resource exploration projects. Furthermore, the event aims to clarify how global debates on climate change can, in some cases, be manipulated to perpetuate the dependence of developing countries.
During these days, representatives of Mozambican communities from the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Tete, Zambézia, Nampula, and Cabo Delgado, supported by Justiça Ambiental, have been sharing their valuable experiences of struggle and resistance in defense of their rights and territories.
JOINT, which is also participating in this event, reinforces the importance of joining forces within Mozambican civil society to protect the human rights of communities affected by these exploration projects, as well as highlighting the relevance of promoting debates that integrate environmental protection and the right to sustainable development, ensuring that progress respects the right to development of poor people.
This Workshop is on its last day today (15).
